“SVA Portfolios will provide greater exposure for the collective creativity of the SVA community,” said Jennifer Phillips, director of the College’s Office of Career Development. “The network will not only connect members, but also provide a venue where potential clients, recruiters and creative enthusiasts can discover the work produced by SVA alumni, faculty members and degree-seeking students.” The Web site is designed to feature work from all degree programs at the College, including original animation, design, film, fine art, illustration and photography.

SVA Portfolios is open to all SVA alumni, faculty members and degree-seeking students. Members can upload an unlimited number of digital files to create an online portfolio and multimedia gallery of projects for others to view and share. Their work will be showcased on both the SVA Portfolios site and in the larger Behance Network, which attracts over 10 million visitors per month.

“With the launch of SVA Portfolios, Behance is thrilled to help showcase all the amazing talent that lives within the SVA community,” said Alex Krug, vice president of Behance.

Behance was designed to support the creative and business aspects of being a creative professional, so projects on SVA Portfolios can be built with text, images, audio or video. Members can share tips and media, collaborate on projects, and get feedback from peers or mentors. They can also promote their work directly on Facebook and Twitter, and sync their portfolio with their LinkedIn account.

“These 100,000 letters are proof that New Yorkers support TAP and believe it is a worthwhile investment in the future of our work force and our state,” said Stephen J. Jerome, APC president and president of Monroe College in the Bronx and New Rochelle. “Any cuts to the TAP program are not in the best interest of New York or its students.”

The executive budget proposes cutting the maximum TAP award from $5,000 to $4,000 for full-time students enrolled in two-year colleges – unfairly targeting the neediest students in New York. “There is no justification to set TAP payments based on the length of the program at the institution a student attends,” Jerome added. “This will establish a two-tier TAP system that is contrary to the New York State Regents’ goal of promoting access to higher education.”

For 35 years TAP has made it possible for thousands of New Yorkers to afford college. It is an investment in New York students. Once the students graduate, they are able to secure good jobs here in New York and become productive, taxpaying members of their communities.

In order to show all interested parties films that are nominated or considered for Academy Awards, each year Variety.com hosts the Variety Screening Series on both coasts. After the films are shown, the A-List filmmakers conduct a Q & A session, for the mostly industry audiences.

Video Production instructor Jason Moore, an active industry professional, was asked by his contacts at Variety if he would produce a series for their website showing segments of the Q & A sessions. A comparable series is produced in Los Angeles by working professionals; their work is now side by side on the website with ours, created by students and graduates.

To take advantage of this exciting opportunity, the entire Video Production faculty compiled a list of outstanding students and recent graduates who had demonstrated their skills and ability as well as their work ethic. The rotating crew has twelve members.

Students function as camera operators, editors and production managers. The positions are paid, and provide many students with their first professional job in the industry. Their resumes will now show names of films and directors that are highly recognizable, since their work is under consideration for an Oscar.

According to instructor Jason Moore who acts as supervisor, “This is as good as a first time job as there could be in this industry. I wish I had had this opportunity when I was just starting out!”

There will be approximately 10 – 15 assignments. Two have been completed: The White Ribbon, an Austrian-German film that takes place just before World War I, and We live in Public, a documentary about the loss of privacy in the Internet age.

Screenings are held at Sunshine Cinemas in SoHo, and the DGA (Director’s Guild) theater in midtown.

The crew began working on the project in mid-September, and will continue through January. Jason hopes the team will be asked back next year, and that this assignment will become an annual opportunity for students to gain real-world experience, mirroring the school’s involvement with the Tribeca Film Festival.

Sponsored by Student Affairs Leader and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA), the webinar was designed for study abroad administrators, college faculty, student affairs staff and other members of the higher education community throughout the United States who are involved in study abroad programs. Topics covered during the 90-minute session included emergency response planning, alcohol and drug policy, international health and medical care, and housing safety.

Sachs’s background as an attorney and seasoned student affairs professional with more than 20 years of higher education experience made him an ideal presenter for this timely topic. He and Rhodes, who has extensive experience in global education, are uniquely qualified to provide a comprehensive look at the issues and answer the questions of personnel at other colleges seeking guidance in these areas.

Says Sachs, “When the study abroad/student affairs collaboration works, students will know their rights and responsibilities and health and safety issues will have been fully addressed.”

Upon hearing about this historic and innovative event Philip Rosedale, Founder and Chairman of Second Life expressed interest and agreed to be the commencement speaker for the approximately 40 graduates. He will address the students during the June 10th, 2009 ceremony in avatar form.
